David Bauman was born in Brooklyn to an immigrant family from Hungary who fled the country's anti-semitic regime. He was an above average student and earned a place in the US Naval Academy upon graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the United State Marine Corps where he served as a fighter pilot. After 10 years in the Marines Bauman enrolled in Harvard where he earned a joint JD/MBA. Following graduation he spent a year clerking in Boston at the US Court of Appeals before moving back to New York.
Back in New York, Bauman joined the US Justice Department as an AUSA. At the same time he joined the Marine Corps Reserve as a JAG Officer. Following 4 successful years as an AUSA he was assigned to Washington where he worked in the Justice Department's Criminal division. In 1989 President Bush nominated Bauman to serve as the Assistant Attorney General responsible for the Criminal Division. In 1993 Bauman again returned to New York where he spent the next 8 years as a partner in the law firm of White and Case specializing in Government Relations and Administrative Law. In 2001 he was appointed as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He is a candidate for the Republican nomination for New York's 2009 mayoral election.
